Vitamin D overdose is very rare, but potentially very serious! This article is for anyone who eats high doses of vitamin D. What should you watch out for?
Toxicity never arises from sunlight or diet. The body has self-regulatory mechanisms in the skin that stop the production of vitamin D when exposed to too much sun. Toxicity occurs almost exclusively through long-term and uncontrolled use of high doses of dietary supplements.
Why is too much dangerous? The main culprit is not vitamin D itself, but what it causes in the body: hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels). Vitamin D significantly increases the absorption of calcium from the intestines. If there is too much vitamin D, the level of calcium in the blood rises above the safe limit, which can lead to the following problems:
- Kidney damage: The kidneys try to excrete excess calcium, which leads to the formation of kidney stones. In extreme toxicity, nephrocalcinosis occurs (calcium deposition directly in the kidney tissue), which can cause permanent kidney failure.
- Soft tissue calcification: Calcium begins to deposit where it doesn't belong. In blood vessels, heart valves, lungs, or stomach walls. This causes hardening of the arteries and increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.
- Cardiac arrhythmia: High calcium levels affect electrical impulses in the heart, which can lead to dangerous heart rhythm disturbances.
- Digestive and neurological problems: early symptoms include nausea, vomiting, constipation, excessive thirst, confusion, and muscle weakness.
When to pay attention?
If you take high doses (e.g., over 8,000 IU per day for several months) without medical supervision, the risk is real. Treatment for toxicity involves immediate discontinuation of the supplement, a low-calcium diet, and possible intravenous hydration.
That is why in Elyxeer 30.5 you will find balanced concentrations of both vitamin D and calcium and magnesium ions. Be careful. The simplistic approach, where vitamin D is perceived as beneficial in any doses, is dangerous. The complexity of the body is enormous and high doses will cause a negative effect elsewhere.
